Richard M. Adams
Executive Chairman of the Board
Richard M. Adams is Executive Chairman of the Board of United Bankshares, Inc. and United Bank. A Parkersburg native, he is a graduate of West Virginia University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
Adams began his banking career as a Management Trainee with Wachovia Bank and Trust in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Later, he returned to his roots in West Virginia to join The Parkersburg National Bank. At the age of 29, he was named President and CEO of what was The Parkersburg National Bank (predecessor to United), a single-office, $100 million in assets, community bank. Under Adams’ leadership, United completed 33 acquisitions and currently has assets of approximately $29.5 billion, 3,000 team members and nearly 250 banking and mortgage offices located throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Washington, D.C. United Bank, headquartered in Vienna, Va., is the largest state-chartered bank headquartered in the Commonwealth.
Richard Adams is a member of the Bank Policy Institute, the World President’s Organization, and is a Board Member of the WV United Health System. Adams is a Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Business Roundtable, the WV Chamber of Commerce, WV Kids Count and Eastern States Bankcard Association in New York. He has been a member of the International Financial Conference and served on the American Bankers Association Governing Council. Adams also served on the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency Regional Advisory Council, the Young President’s Organization of America and the Rotary Club.
In 2020, Adams received the Washington Business Journal’s CEO COVID Response Leader Award. In addition, Adams has been inducted into the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame and has been honored as a recipient of the Ernst & Young “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the Executive Magazine CEO of the Year Award. Adams was selected by Morningstar, Inc. as one of three nominees nationwide for their CEO of the Year Award and was ranked #20 in the Washington Business Journal “Power 100” listing. He also has published articles in various national banking journals. Adams was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves and served on the Vestry of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

Chief Executive Officer
Richard M. Adams, Jr. is Chief Executive Officer of United Bankshares, Inc. and Vice-Chairman of United Bank. He joined United in 1994 and served as President of the Bank from 2014 to 2022 and previously as Executive Vice President from 2000 to 2014. Adams, Jr. brings deep banking experience and industry expertise that has enabled him to successfully drive the business to become one of the nation’s top performing banks.
Prior to joining United, Adams, Jr. worked as an associate at Bowles Rice, LLP and practiced law in the areas of Commercial Law, Real Estate, Employment Law and Litigation. He received his law degree from the Washington and Lee School of Law and performed his undergraduate studies at Pepperdine University and Rollins College. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Adams, Jr., is active in several community and industry-based organizations, including the Federal City Council, the Financial Services Roundtable, the American Bankers Council, the Mid-Size Bank Coalition of America and the Greenbrier Health and Wellness Advisory Council. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Bankers Association and is a past Chairman of the West Virginia Bankers Association and the West Virginia Bankers Trust Division.
James J. Consagra, Jr.
President
James J. Consagra, Jr. serves as President of United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the operation of day-to-day banking activities including all sales and service lines of business, commercial and consumer lending, retail banking and wealth management.
With decades of banking experience, Consagra has served in various roles, including Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of United Bank. Prior to joining United, he served as both Treasurer and Director of George Mason Bankshares, Inc., and Executive Vice President of George Mason Bank. Previously, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant.
Consagra received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from James Madison University, and he currently serves as a Trustee on the Board of George Mason University Foundation.
Ross M. Draber
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Ross M. Draber currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Bankshares, Inc. Joining the organization in 2010, he previously served as Chief Operating Officer of United Bank, a subsidiary of UBSI, and as Chief Administrative Officer. Throughout his tenure, he has played an integral role in the Company’s expansion efforts through several mergers and acquisitions.
A graduate of Washington and Lee University, Draber earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration, and he is a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) charterholder. He was also honored in the Washington Business Journal 40 Under 40 Class of 2017.
Douglas B. Ernest
Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer
Douglas B. Ernest serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer of United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the quality of the Company’s loan portfolio, including underwriting, credit administration, special assets and establishing policies. Ernest’s team works to maintain United’s strong credit culture and credit risk management.
A seasoned banking professional, Ernest has held various positions at United, such as Commercial Loan Officer, Market President, Regional President and Credit Risk Manager. Ernest holds the designation of Credit Risk Certified (CRC) by the Risk Management Association and is also a graduate of the American Bankers Association Stonier Graduate School of Banking and Commercial Lending School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and MBA from West Virginia University.
Julie R. Gurtis
Executive Vice President; President, United Bank
Julie R. Gurtis serves as Executive Vice President, President of United Bank, overseeing all banking services and nearly 250 locations across the Company’ s footprint. Joining the Bank in 1990, she previously served as Chief Commercial Banking Officer, and throughout her career with the Bank, she also held other various roles, including Commercial Lender, Market President and Regional President.
Active throughout the Bank’s communities and industry organizations, Gurtis currently serves as Treasurer on the Board of West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities. She also previously served on boards with Charleston Area Alliance, YWCA Charleston and West Virginia Symphony.
Gurtis is a graduate of West Virginia University, earning her undergraduate degree in finance.
Matthew L. Humphrey
Executive Vice President and Head of Wealth & Investment Management
Matthew L. Humphrey serves as Executive Vice President and Head of Wealth & Investment Management. Joining the Company in 2016, he leads the overall management of and strategic planning for United Wealth Management and also serves as Chief Executive Officer of United Brokerage Services, Inc.
Prior to joining United, Humphrey served in the Private Wealth Management Group of Goldman Sachs, where he advised high net worth families, foundations and institutions. Humphrey also served in multiple leadership positions as an Army Aviation Officer in Korea, Central America, Afghanistan and the United States.
A graduate of the United State Military Academy at West Point, Humphrey earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics and Civil Engineering. He also earned his MBA from Vanderbilt University with concentrations in finance, strategy and entrepreneurship. He holds the following licenses: Series 7, Series 24 and Series 66.
Henry M. Kayes, Jr.
Executive Vice President; Chief Operating Officer, United Bank
Henry M. Kayes, Jr. serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Bank. Launching his career in 1986, he is a seasoned leader in the banking industry.
Throughout his tenure at United, Kayes has held key management roles, leading fundamental business operations across the Bank. Prior to joining United, Kayes co-founded Centra Bank Berkeley County in 2001, serving as President until it was acquired by United in 2011. He also previously served in various management positions across the industry, including as Senior Vice President and Market President of BB&T (now Truist) for the Eastern Panhandle region of West Virginia.
An active leader in the Bank’s communities and industry organizations, he currently serves on the Board of Governors at Shepherd University. He is a former board member of West Virginia University Medicine-University Healthcare, United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, and the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation. He is a past chairman and board member of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce.
Kayes is a graduate of Elon University, where he earned a BA in economics in 1990.
Charles J. Mildren
Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Banking Officer
Charles J. Mildren serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Banking Officer of United Bank, leading all consumer lines of business, including mortgage, home equity, direct and indirect lending, retail branches and consumer credit cards. Beginning his career with United Bank in 2000, he previously served as Regional President in West Virginia, Market President of the Parkersburg Market and Vice President, Commercial Loan Officer.
Throughout his career, Mildren has made serving his community a top priority. He is the former chair and current secretary of the Wood County (W. Va.) Economic Development Authority, helping to support business growth in the community. Since 2010, Mildren has been the chair of the annual Kids Golf Classic, a fundraising tournament to support the Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg. He is a past chair of the United Way of the Mid-Ohio Valley and board member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport. Mildren is also on the board for the West Virginia Bankers Association, serving as the board chairman in 2022.
Mildren is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown University.
Michael P. Proctor
Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Banking Officer
Michael P. Proctor currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Banking Officer of United Bank. Launching his career at United in 2005, Proctor has held a variety of roles within the commercial banking team. Prior to his current role, he served as Market President of United Bank’s Arlington and Alexandria Markets. Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized for his record commercial loan production and commercial outstandings growth for the Company.
Proctor received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in finance from West Virginia University. An active part of the business and local communities, he currently serves on the board of the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and as Trustee of the Inova Health Foundation, and is the co-chair of the United Bank Charity Classic.
Anna J. Schultheis
Executive Vice President and Secretary to the Board
Anna J. Schultheis serves as Executive Vice President of UBSI and Secretary to the Board of Directors. She joined United in 1982, holding various positions in Executive Administration, and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2010. Schultheis is a member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Chamber of Commerce, as well as a past President of the Marietta Welfare League and the St. Mary’s School Board. She also previously served on the board of the Parkersburg Catholic Athletic Administration, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Humane Society of Parkersburg and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Committee.
Ami L. Shaver
Executive Vice President and Head of Human Resources; Director, Retail Sales and Service
Ami L. Shaver is Executive Vice President and Head of Human Resources. In her role, she works to strengthen and improve the culture across the organization through pay and benefits, performance management, training and development, recruiting and on-boarding, as well as reinforcing the values of the Company.
Shaver joined the United team in 1995 in Shareholder Relations. Having worked for United Brokerage Services, Inc., a subsidiary of United Bank, in all capacities from 1997 to 2020, including operations, sales and management, she holds the Series 7, 63, 65, 24, and 27 licenses issued by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Since 2005, Shaver has also served as the Director of Retail Sales and Service, in which she is responsible for the retail initiatives in United Bank’s branch locations and leads the Bank’s Customer Care Centers.
Shaver previously served as member of the West Virginia Bankers Association’s School of Banking Board of Trustees and the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University Board of Trustees. She currently serves on the Board of Governors for West Virginia University of Parkersburg. A graduate of West Virginia University, Shaver earned her undergraduate degree in accounting. She also successful graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at LSU.
W. Mark Tatterson
Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer
W. Mark Tatterson is Chief Financial Officer at United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for developing and administering UBSI’s corporate financial strategies, as well as oversight of accounting management, external financial reporting, investor relations and the corporate treasury function. He joined United in 1997 and has served in various keys roles across credit risk management, treasury and finance.
Tatterson earned his undergraduate degree in finance from West Virginia University. He is also a graduate of the American Bankers Association’s Stonier Graduate School of Banking.
Darren K. Williams
Executive Vice President, Chief Information and Risk Officer
Darren K. Williams serves as Chief Risk Officer at United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the Company’s strategy for enterprise risk management, including relationships with regulators and supervisory institutions. Williams’ team provides oversight and guidance on key areas of risk management including loan review, compliance matters, the Bank Secrecy Act, fraud and security, the Community Reinvestment Act and Fair Lending.
Williams joined United through its acquisition of Centra Financial Holdings where he served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Information Officer. Prior to this, he was a senior manager at Ernst & Young LLP, specializing in financial institutions.

Charles L. Capito, Jr.
Former Managing Director, Wells Fargo Advisors
Mr. Capito is the former Managing Director of the Wells Fargo Advisors Complex in West Virginia. He is highly credentialed as a finance executive, financial advisor and has overseen the management of billions of dollars in assets throughout his career. While at Wells Fargo, Mr. Capito was responsible for managing seven offices. In this capacity, he was responsible for the prudent management of the firm’s resources, building local partnerships and recruiting talent while creating an inclusive environment of teamwork and innovation. Prior to his position with Wells Fargo, Mr. Capito was an Executive Vice President and Director of Business Development for United Bank where he provided leadership for the implementation of sales initiatives and other private wealth management strategies. While at United Bank, Mr. Capito served as a member of the United Brokerage Services, Inc. board. Mr. Capito currently serves as the President of the Board for the Congressional Club Museum and Foundation in Washington, D.C., is a member on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, and is a trustee and Audit Committee Chairman for both the Charleston Area Medical Center, Inc. and the CAMC Health Systems, Inc.
Peter A. Converse
Former President & Chief Executive Officer, Virginia Commerce Bancorp, Inc.
Mr. Converse is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Virginia Commerce Bancorp, Inc., and Virginia Commerce Bank. He has been a director of the Company since 2014.
Mr. Converse has extensive banking experience of over 40 years. He joined Virginia Commerce Bancorp, Inc. in January 1994 as President and Chief Executive Officer, as well as served on their board for over 20 years. Prior to that, he was the Senior Vice President, Chief Lending Officer for Federal Capital Bank from March 1992 to December 1993; Senior Vice President of Bank of Maryland from October 1990 to March 1992; and Executive Vice President, Chief Lending Officer for Century National Bank from May 1986 to July 1990 and Senior Vice President, Chief Lending Officer for Central National Bank from July 1979 to April 1986. He brings this experience with him as a member of the Executive Committee.
Sara DuMond, MD, FAAP
Pediatrician and Founder and CEO of Pediatric Housecalls
Dr. Sara DuMond is a practicing board-certified pediatrician and the founder and chief executive officer of Pediatric Housecalls, PLLC. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy and went on to earn her medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine with AOA distinction, the highest honor society for physicians in our country. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Carolinas Medical Center in 2003.
Dr. DuMond is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the NC Medical Society and Mecklenburg Medical Society. In addition to her clinical practice, she has served on numerous advisory boards as an advocate for evidence-based child health information, including Dr. Brown’s Expert Medical Panel, American Baby Magazine, WebMD, and KidsHealth.org. She has also served as a volunteer relief physician in Guatemala with Medical Missions Ministries and is active in Mecklenburg Community Church.
Michael P. Fitzgerald
Vice Chairman
Mr. Fitzgerald is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, focusing on business development and client relationships. Most recently, he served as President of United Bank. He is also the former Founder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Georgetown. He has been a director of the Company since 2016.
Mr. Fitzgerald has nearly 35 years of banking experience. He served as a director of Bank of Georgetown for 10 years. Prior to that, he was the Senior Vice President of Sequoia Bank. Mr. Fitzgerald began his banking career with Riggs Bank, where for 15 years he served in several capacities including Corporate Banking, Special Assistant to the Chairman and CEO of The Riggs National Bank of Maryland.
Patrice A. Harris, MD, MA, FAPA
Psychiatrist & Chief Executive Officer, eMed
Dr. Harris is a practicing psychiatrist trained in child/adolescent and forensic psychiatry and the immediate past president of the American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of physicians and medical students in the U.S.
Becoming the 174th AMA President in June 2019, Dr. Harris was the first African American woman to hold that position within the organization. She has served on the AMA Board of Trustees since 2011 and is the chair of the AMA Opioid Task Force. Apart from the AMA, she has also held leadership positions with the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the Medical Association of Georgia, The Big Cities Health Coalition, and the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association. She was also the founding president of the Georgia Psychiatry Political Action Committee.
Diana Lewis Jackson
President & Founder, Action Facilities Management
Ms. Jackson is the President, CEO and founder of Action Facilities Management (AFM), a premier government and commercial contract firm specializing in the building integrated facilities maintenance, janitorial/sanitation, administrative and security services. By prioritizing her clients’ missions, her employees’ well-being and investing in both corporate and community support, she had grown AFM to include just under 400 employees in 10 states and Washington, D.C. AFM champions diversity through its employment practices and retention programs and is proud to be among the minority and women-owned small businesses that represent West Virginia.
For the past several decades, Ms. Jackson has focused on building her community. She currently serves on the Discover the Real West Virginia Foundation, West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, West Virginia Regional Technology Park Board of Directors, WVU Medicine Cancer Institute Council, the United Bank Advisory Board and numerous other committees and boards. Ms. Jackson was previously appointed to the WVU Board of Governors and the WVU Hospital Board of Directors.
Among her many awards, Ms. Jackson was elected to the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame in 2021, selected as Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year in 2020, the Small Business Administration’s 8(a)-Graduate of the Year in 2016 and the West Virginia Small Business Person of the Year in 2013. She is a graduate of Fairmont State University with degrees in accounting and banking.
J. Paul McNamara
Chairman, Potomac Capital Advisors
Mr. McNamara is the Chairman of Potomac Capital Advisors, a privately held real estate investment company which advises two real estate partnerships. He has been a director of the Company since 2003, and former Vice Chairman of the Board of United Bank.
Mr. McNamara has spent over 30 years in the banking industry. He was the President and Chief Operating Officer of Sequoia Bancshares for 15 years. Prior to Sequoia, Mr. McNamara worked for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company for three years and the National Bank of Washington for 12 years, where he held several senior management positions. He has gained valuable insight through his banking experience in senior management positions into retail banking, commercial banking, bank operations and systems. He brings this extensive knowledge of the banking industry to his role as a director of the Company, Chairman of the Governance and Nominating Committee, and as a member of the Executive, Compensation and Risk Committees.
Mark R. Nesselroad
Chief Executive Officer, Glenmark Holding LLC
Mr. Nesselroad is the Chief Executive Officer of Glenmark Holding Limited Liability Company, a real estate development company. He has been a director of the Company since 2011.
Prior to serving on United’s Board, Mr. Nesselroad served on Centra Financial Holdings, Inc.’s, Board of Directors from 2003 to July of 2011. He was a member of Centra’s Audit, Executive, Compensation and Finance Committees. He is a real estate developer in one of United’s key markets. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Housing Development Fund and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the West Virginia United Health System as well as Mylan Park Foundation, Inc. He is currently the Chairman of the Risk Committee and a member of the Governance and Nominating, Executive, and Compensation Committees.
Lacy I. Rice, III
Co-founder & Managing Partner, Federal Capital Partners
Mr. Rice is the co-founder and Managing Partner of Federal Capital Partners (FCP), a privately held real estate investment company that acquires, operates and develops residential and commercial assets nationally. Additionally, FCP deploys capital in residential and commercial product sectors through joint venture equity, mezzanine debt and preferred equity investments. With nearly 35 years of experience in real estate investment and corporate finance, he also currently serves on FCP’s investment committee. Prior to co-founding FCP in 1999, he was a principal at The Carlyle Group, where, he also served on the company’s real estate funds investment committee. He also previously served in roles at Alex. Brown, Haas & Haynie Corporation and Chemical Bank.
Dedicated to fostering growth in his community, Mr. Rice serves on numerous organizations’ boards. He is a board member of the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC), member of the NMHC Affordable Housing Council and member of the Urban Land Institute. He also serves on the board for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.
In 2020, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington named Mr. Rice an Honoree for Youth in Real Estate. Additionally, the Boys & Girls Club of America presented him with the National Silver Medallion and Outstanding Achievement Award – Board Member of the Year. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University.
Albert H. Small, Jr.
Founder & President, Renaissance Centro Inc., LLC
Mr. Small is the Founder and President of Renaissance Centro, a nationally recognized real estate development firm, specializing in residential, commercial and hotel development. He joined the United Bankshares Board of Directors in 2018.
Mr. Small is also the Founder of the former Renaissance Housing Corp., one of Washington, D.C.’s most highly recognized luxury home builder and high-rise tower developer. Ms. Weddle is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a former Executive Vice President of The Long & Foster Companies. She has been a director of the Company since 2004, and is also a director of United Bank.
Ms. Weddle has spent her career in real estate and related financial services. For over 20 years, she was in management and leadership roles in the real estate industry. Her former employer, The Long & Foster Companies, is the nation’s largest privately-held real estate company. In her most recent position as Executive Vice President and head of Operations, which she held for almost 15 years, she skillfully brought together a team responsible for a wide variety of diverse activities, such as legal, marketing, information technology, human resources, and accounting. Her expertise as head of Operations covered strategic planning, as well as the design and implementation of efficient systems and processes for distribution to thousands of internal and external users. She also understands customer service and consumer behavior. She brings this broad and relevant experience to her role as a director of the Company and as a member of the Risk and Audit Committees, where she has served as a financial expert for many years.

Mr. White is the President of Gilbert Development, Inc. and the Principal of JRW, LLC, a consulting firm. He is the former Interim President of Marshall University, the former President and Chief Operating Officer of International Resource Partners LP and the former President and Chief Executive Officer of International Industries, Inc. He is also the former President and Chief Executive Officer of the West Virginia Coal Association. He has been a director of the Company since 2008.
Mr. White has served in several senior management positions in the coal industry for over 40 years. He also has more than 20 years of executive level experience with nonprofit entities which provides him with a broad perspective on business operations. He has been a past director of another publicly traded banking company. He brings this expertise in corporate management to his role as a director of the Company and as a member of the Audit, Executive, Compensation and Governance and Nominating Committees.

Mr. Winter is the President of Bray & Oakley Insurance Agency, Inc. He has been a director of the Company since 1996.
Mr. Winter has spent over 35 years working in the insurance and financial services industry. His experience as President of Bray & Oakley Insurance Agency, as well as a past chairperson of an Audit Committee of an acquired banking, has provided him with significant financial experience. He also served on the Executive Committee and was the chairperson of the Compensation Committee for this acquired banking company. Through his long experience with the insurance and financial industries, he possesses expertise in financial and risk management matters as well as business development and marketing. He brings this knowledge to his role as a director of the Company, the Chairman of the Compensation Committee and as a member of the Executive, Audit and Governance and Nominating Committees. He also serves as the Lead Director of the independent directors of the Board.
